Re-creation Service
There are an untold number of vintage comic books missing their covers. It's usually the first thing to go, followed by the centerfold... the two "ends" of a comic. Most of these will remain coverless for the rest of their lives, but the more valuable and popular coverless comics find a home with collectors who are looking for an affordable copy to own.
For the most sought-after coverless keys, we offer cover re-creations shot from actual comic books in attractive shape. Each cover is shot on paper of similar thickness and gloss, and exactly matches the original inside and out. We then match a re-creation to your coverless comic and cut it fit the interior. Any major tears to the interior are sealed, and loose centerfolds or split wraps are repaired before the cover is attached. Finally the book is assembled using the original staples, and pressed.
Occasionally people wonder how CGC would grade a coverless with a re-creation attached. Because the re-created cover is not original, CGC still considers the comic incomplete and will grade it as such. Also, collectors have asked if a re-creation cover enhances the value of the comic book enough to justify the cost. There are some cases where we've seen our re-creation jobs fetch considerable prices. Overall though, the motivation for most clients seeking re-creation is to simply have an attractive copy of a very expensive book for an affordable price.
Our list of available covers is to the right. If you need a re-creation not on this list, but have a cover from another copy, we can shoot a recreation from that to use on your coverless copy. We can also re-create centerfolds, but because we do not have many on file, one will have to be provided to us to shoot from.
Cost is $200 per cover and an additional $100 per interior wrap. The $200 fee includes all of the conservation work listed above. Additional restoration, such as piece fill and page cleaning will be extra, and determined when the book is Pro-screened. Turn time for re-creations is three months.
